Who We Are
William Wilberforce was a British parliamentarian who spearheaded the movement to abolish slavery in the late 1700s. Through his tireless work and the dedication of his friends and supporters, the slave trade was abolished in England in 1807, followed by the abolition of slavery itself in 1833. Wilberforce and his friends managed to take British society from the place where slavery was accepted to one where the very idea of slavery was abhorrent.
Just like in Wilberforce’s time, there are members of our society who are labelled as non-persons, whose lives are deemed worthless and whose rights are not recognized by law. The Wilberforce Project exists to be a voice for the voiceless, an agent of change, and a representative of like-minded groups in Alberta to the media and our politicians.
